The essentials

What is a business loan?

Business financing includes term loans, lines of credit, equipment loans, SBA-backed programs, invoice financing and merchant cash advances. Product labels do not guarantee the same disclosures or protections as consumer credit.

Convert every quote to comparable cash-flow terms: net funds received, total repayment, payment frequency, term, collateral, guarantee and effective annualized cost. Merchant cash advances may be structured as receivables purchases rather than loans, but several states require commercial financing disclosures.

How it works

  1. 01

Define the funded use and expected return.

  2. 02

Prepare financial statements, tax returns and cash-flow projections.

  3. 03

Compare bank, credit-union, SBA and responsible online offers.

  4. 04

Track covenants and maintain a repayment reserve.

When it can—and cannot—make sense

Potentially useful when

  • Funds create or preserve cash flow greater than cost.
  • Payment timing matches revenue timing.
  • Personal guarantee risk is acceptable.
  • The business can survive a downside case.

Pause when

  • Debt only delays an insolvent business decision.
  • Daily debits consume operating cash.
  • The provider will not disclose total repayment.
  • A confession-of-judgment or aggressive guarantee is not understood.

Costs and risks to count

  • Interest or factor rate
  • Origination, guarantee and packaging fees
  • Broker compensation
  • Prepayment formulas
  • Collateral filing and appraisal expenses
Federal baseline

SBA programs follow federal eligibility and guarantee rules. ECOA applies to business credit, while disclosure coverage depends on product and jurisdiction.

Questions to ask before signing

1

How much cash arrives?

2

What total dollars must be repaid?

3

What is the payment frequency?

4

What personal guarantee applies?

5

Can the obligation be prepaid economically?

Location matters

Check the rules in your state

Commercial-financing disclosure, brokering, usury, licensing, confession-of-judgment and collection laws differ. Consumer protections may not apply merely because an individual guarantees the debt.
